Garbage disposals are only meant to dispose of residual food waste. Many clogs and broken disposals are caused by putting too much waste or inappropriate waste down the drain.
What should go in the garbage disposal?
Soft or liquid foods, as well as residual food waste are usually safe to put into the garbage disposal. Residual food waste is whatever is left behind on a plate after clearing it off into the trash can.
What should NOT go in the garbage disposal?
Food items such as:
- Large chunks of food
- Fruit or vegetable peels
- Coffee grounds (Residual amounts are OK)
- Rice/grains
- Pasta
- Flour
- Bones
- Eggshells
Non-food items such as:
- Plastic
- Coffee filters
- Tea bags
- Aquarium rocks
